Not every tradition originates here at Christ School, but the boys make it their own.
Taylor University in Indiana deserves credit for coming up with the “Silent Night” basketball game in 1997. It has since morphed into “Christmas in the Greenie Dome,” a nice release for students in the middle of exams and a holiday staple every December at Christ School.
The Greenies (9-1) will host Legion Collegiate (2-5) out of Rock Hill, S.C., in this year’s game Tuesday at 5:30 p.m., following a junior varsity game between the schools at 4.
What to expect?
Fans are encouraged to join the boys by wearing something festive to Mebane Field House – a Santa hat, ugly sweater, or even pajamas. The Silent Night game gets its name from the fact that the crowd remains quiet until the home team scores its 10th point. Then the crowd erupts, and it is business as usual for the rest of the game.
Adding some luster to this latest Christmas in the Greenie Dome is the fact that Christ School is North Carolina’s top-ranked private school team, led by the scoring of Keenan Wilkins ’24 (16.1 points per game), Mikey Wilkins ’25 (11.5 ppg.), Lleyton Thomas-Johnson ’24 (8.6 ppg.), Jamari Briggs ’24 (8.0 ppg.), and Bryson Cokley ’24 (7.4 ppg.).
“It’s very unique. I’m more excited for the seniors because it’s their last one. It’s a really good opportunity for them to go out with a bang,” Greenies coach Josh Coley said.
“Then I always like to watch the younger guys who have never seen it before or they’re new. It’s so quiet, you can hear them whispering (in the leadup to the 10th point). Our student section, our fans, and our Christ School community that comes to games is just remarkable and they make it a great night.”
